Ideal Size – Home – Bathroom Wash Basin

When you plan your house, you need to keep a tape handy all the time. You need to measure things and identify the sweet spot for your comfort. Note that space is a variable thing. For some small is big for some big is small. Some people are claustrophobic[dislike confined and congested spaces]. In essence you need to decide what is the ideal size for various rooms of your house. You have to ensure that when your floor plan is prepared by the  architect there are no compromises on this minimum requirement.

In this article we will explore the modern bathroom size requirements.

A modern bathroom has a western toilet and a shower area and a wash basin area as  part of the same bathroom. We can check on Wash Basin area in this post.

Wash Basin

A wash basin is ideally used for your morning activities – brush your teeth, wash your face, freshen up, Shave, face packs, hair dye, hair drying, etc.

Now this is where you may have to make a choice in dimension between master bathroom and rest of the bathrooms based on usage. Plan more space for regularly used bathrooms and less generously for guest rooms which are used rarely.

A modern wash basin is table top variant. In the sense that it is placed on-top of a platform. It looks gorgeous and is the most preferred one of-late. But it is also possible to buy a single piece wash basin in glass which does not require any platform, but I would prefer these kind of wash basins for the dining area which is used just for hand-wash.

For a bathroom the ceramic/designer wash basins come around 1.5 to 2.5 ft in width. The platform on which this is placed is to be designed slightly bigger than the chosen wash basin. Platform can be in wood with laminate or granite or any other material of your choice[water proof].

Here a comfortable wash basin is something where you could wash your face and the dimensions of it is subjective but it should be a minimum 1.5 ft, else you will be splashing the water on the platform. So try washing your face in some of the wash basins in friends or relatives or restaurants and see what is comfortable and what fits your size of the planned bathroom.

So you will find that a [2ft x 2 ft] or [2ft x 3ft] is a suitable platform for wash basin and a big enough mirror for that would be ideal for daily activities.

If the wash basin is for dining area you can go for designer wash basins of lesser dimension because its used just for washing hands after your meal.

It is good to go for single lever mixer which can control hot water and cold water so that mixing  can be done with just one hand.

You will need to plan a light point just above the mirror so that light falls on your face when you are using the wash basin.
