Ideal Size – Home – Bedroom
Once again, the day you decide to construct your house, from that moment you need to walk around with a measurement tape in your pocket. As you go around there may be spaces you like and then you can measure what is your sweet spot for the ideal space.
So what are the things that you need in your bedroom.
Do you need a bed ? Yes
Do you need wardrobes ? Yes
Do you need a small seating ? Yes
Do you need a dressing table or dressing mirror will do ? Yes based on size
Do you want a TV ? Optional but Plan the points.
Now some dimensions of your basic needs
King size Bed – 6ft x 6.5ft
Seating/study – 3ft x 3ft
Wardrobe – 2ft depth x 9 ft [ 3 wardrobes for 3ft each][ for two+1 ]
So the main factor influcencing your bedroom size is the King Size Bed of 6ft x 6.5ft. An additonal 2ft open space on each side of the bed is a good idea. So a 10ft x 10ft bedroom is a decent bedroom size. But the catch is that the wardrobes needs space. Now add a 2ftx9ft to this room. So you arrive at 10×12 ft bedroom with wardrobe on the 12ft side is a decent master bedroom.
A more luxurious master bedroom with lets say a sofa seating will be around 14×14. Another option is to have a separate walk-in wardrobe section. That way the wardrobe does not impact the spaciousness of your bedroom. Do consider all the things you would like in your bedroom and decide.
Most ready houses and apartments offer master bedroom in size 10×12. In my personal view here are the dimenions that should be minimum.
1. Master Bedroom
Includes Wardrobe – 12×14
No wardrobe /separate wardrobe – 12×12
2. Regular Bedroom
Includes wardrobe – 10×12
without wardrobe – 10×10
3. Study rooms/Guest rooms
Includes wardrobe – 8×9 – Bed of size 6×3 ft
without/separate wardrobe – 8×7 – Bed of size 6×3 ft
For individual house I suggest to keep the bedrooms on higher side if you are building for yourself. Try not to squeeze multiple bedrooms and in turn compromise your own room. Guest room can be treated as optional and a future add on if you have to compromise your master bedroom. The logic being, a guest could probably be in your house lets say just few days. But you have to stay for the entire life in a small room, suffocating and very hot in summers. So think and prioritise. Keep yourself at the center of your house. Do not design your house for a one off event or something you may require once in a bluemoon. These are the problems with priority. So keep you[your family which stays everyday] and your requirements as the highest priority. Also budget wise its very important. You can build multiple bathrooms but each bathroom is a cost interms of fixtures, etc. Plan and priority are both very important.
For example
Do not compromise your master bedroom for a guest room
Do not compromise the size of your living room for a verandah
Stop impressing others and plan the house for people who live in the house. Ofcourse if you have the budget and space then you can plan all these aspects. We are talking about cases where you need a bedroom in ground floor but you also try to squeeze another guest room in same floor and make the actual bedroom smaller. These are things where you need priority.
Hope the aspects to consider were useful. Please do leave your comments and share your views on the bedroom size. Please ignore the additional aspects if they dont appeal to your senses and you have guests visiting you quite often. In such a case you may have to plan for a big guest room.
In anycase use all the inputs and pick things that appeal to you.

Good one again! Question when you say master bedroom with wardrobe 12×14… Does it mean including wardrobe space or excluding wardrobe?
Thanks for pointing out Edited the post now. Basically 12×14 when you want wardrobe in same room. Because 12×2 ft goes for wardrobe on one side of the room.
Thanks for quick reply! So if my understanding is not wrong…I need to plan for 12×14 room (wall to wall space) to have spacious master bedroom… Am I right?
Yes minimum. Else it will not look like master bedroom from the number of flats I have come across. If you have choice go for higher than 12×14 or plan separate walkin wardrobe..My suggestions is visit few flats with 1600+ sq ft with a tape and see what you find comfy. I have tried to give minimum numbers because actual is very subjective and based on past experience with luxury.
What could be the bathroom measurement ,If we include Bathroom in the 12*14 master bedroom.
Nandu please check ideal size for bathroom. Hope it helps to arrive at your required dimension. Thank you
