Use Laser Levels and Laser Measurement tools for House construction in India

If you are an engineer and watch your house getting constructed in primitive ways you are normally disappointed.
When you see your mason hanging a plumb line to measure the verticality of a wall or column or door frame you know that something is amiss.
When you use a measuring tape to measure a distance and you seem happy with it but when you see him struggle to touch the tip of a roof or asking another helper to hold the other end of the tape, you sense some discomfort.
When he uses a wooden protractor[moole matta] to measure a 90% angle for the wall to wall intersection you know that this does the job but there is got to be a better way.
When you see two people talking to each telling “pull it a little low, a little bit higher” trying to closely look at a transparent thin pipe filled with water, you know this water level can add error at each measurement. [Note that water level is used to identify a line parallel to the earth. Useful to determine the plinth beam level, floor level, window level, etc. This is useful to identify a “Flat” surface parallel to the ground]
So being a curious engineer, I began my search for something better to validate his work. So I stumbled upon a laser level and laser distance measuring tool.
Laser Distance Measuring tool
This distance measuring tool is a simple equipment which projects a laser light onto a surface and it measure the distance.
Advantages :
- You do not need another person to hold one end of the tape to do the measurements.
- Accuracy to a few millimetre
- Take less than a second to do the measurement.
- Minimal movement. You can measure the entire room dimensions standing in one corner of the room.
- Can carry it in your pocket.
I bought one from Bosch, of course there are a lot of brands available in the market and they do a good job! Choose one that suits you.
Laser Line Level
By far the most useful tool that I got to purchase. So what I used this for initially was to validate what work my mason did so that I do not need to disturb him in his new work.
After a while, the masons, plumbers, fabricators, everyone asked me how much it costs and where to buy it. Whether they actually bought is another story, but they immediately knew what it offers. So I will tell you all the ways you could use this to make your house construction better.
First you need to understand what it does.
- It provides you a laser line displayed on the surface[best used during evenings or in shade since the laser line cannot be seen in bright sunlight]
- It displays a perfectly horizontal line. So you could measure the entire flooring level by placing it in a common place visible to all rooms. You could ensure all switch boxes are placed at same level within a room. The possibilities are endless. I will list each of the places I used it in later sections.
- It displays a perfectly vertical line to the ground. So you could see whether a door frame is being placed straight by placing this line on the edge of a door frame.
- In some laser levels there the line continues onto the roof. So you could place a fan point in line with some other structure in the house.
The limits with laser levels are just a endless. Once you have it, you can use it for every single thing in your house. Its a must have tool for everyone who wants to do something different and experiment with technology.
Hi Naveen,
Very educational blog I must say. I was wondering if you could provide the make and model of the 2 instruments you mentioned.
Thanks in advance,
Neeraj
Bosch GLL-3X Line Laser (Blue) https://www.amazon.in/dp/B00J2N9GWE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_0lklCbWVJ6H4D
“Bosch glm” for distance. Note that there are newer models in the same. You can buy based on what is maximum distance you need to measure.
